If we were to define a soul, we could say that the soul is the energy which resides in the human body and makes it functional, just as energy generating from a battery makes a torch functional. The soul can also be visualized as the filament of a glass bulb which radiates light through the glass wall of the bulb, viz. the body.
However, though it is the soul which gives the body its sense of being alive, the soul has an identity beyond the body as well.
